Use of corticosteroids in human and veterinary medicine

The recent news of a positive test for Betamethasone in Medina Spirit reminded me of when I received two injections of the same drug during my first pregnancy. This one common thread between Medina Spirit and me prompted further research into the drug and its relatives, such as Dexamethasone (Covid-19 drug).

They are glucocorticoids.

Betamethasone and dexamethasone are glucocorticoids, which exist both in natural and synthetic forms. The natural glucocorticoids are made in humans as well as some other animals. In people, glucocorticoids or steroid hormones are produced by the adrenal gland located above the kidney. The adrenal gland is composed of the…

Let’s get rid of the misconceptions and the outdated image of autism.

Recently, Elon Musk hosted Saturday Night Live, and he claimed to be the first person with Asperger’s to host the show. This statement has been proven false by other sources. The Canadian actor Daniel Aykroyd was the first person with Asperger’s to host SNL. However, the focus of my story is not to discuss the first host on SNL with Asperger’s.

My purpose in writing this story is to shed some light on the usage of outdated terminology used by celebrities and influencers to describe their diagnoses. Instead of using the Asperger’s label, Elon Musk should have used autism. To…

The vocabulary of the novel coronavirus variants.

Just like the flu virus, the novel coronavirus or the SARS-CoV-2 also changes over time. This change happens through mutation, which refers to changes in the genetic sequence of the SARS-CoV-2 in comparison to originally identified variants. For SARS-CoV-2, the baselines or the originals are the Wuhan-Hu1 and USA-WA1.

Since the first sequencing till present, the genetic sequence of the SARS-CoV-2 has changed in different ways. These changes or variants are tracked worldwide so that scientists can better understand the properties of the variants and their impact on the response to the pandemic. The group of scientists in the US…

Depending on how one defines technology, we can argue that humans have been using technology for learning for as long as we have been on the planet. From communicating through pictures in caves to the current use of multimedia, we have come far in understanding the mediums we can use for learning and teaching. Video is just one of the mediums through which people can learn. The other examples are text, audio, computing, social media, games, augmented reality, and lately, artificial intelligence¹.

The Backstory of Video-Based Instructions (VBI)

The seeds for VBI seem to have been planted during WWII, primarily minimizing the time required to train…

I regularly read articles, stories, books, and papers related to healthcare in the hope of improving my health and that of my family. Sometimes my understanding of the content is incomplete because I forgot high school biology lessons. I don’t know if there is anyone else who also needs a refresher. As a result, I wrote this mini-lesson or a go-to guide describing the composition of a human body from macro to microscopic view.

My purpose here is to give you a big picture. Just click on various terms if you want to explore the topics in-depth.

When my daughter was born, I saw how beautiful and wide-eyed she was. She was born prematurely, so she stayed in the NICU for over a month. The nurses told us that she didn’t like to sleep; it is as if she will miss out on all the things around her. Later as my daughter grew older, she started to draw stick figures for people. She paid so much attention to drawing the eyes, especially the eyelashes.

In one of my earlier posts, I describe viral load and how it is measured. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has provided Emergency Use Authorization (EUAs) for various tests used to diagnose COVID-19 caused by the SARS-Cov-2 virus. Manufacturers use various techniques to detect the SARS-CoV-2 virus, such as molecular tests, antigen tests, serology or antibody tests, and adaptive immune response tests.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have expanded our vocabulary. We can now use the terms like the viral load and vaccine efficacy in our conversations. But, do we really know what these terms mean? In this post, I explore the definition of viral load and how it is measured.

Definition of Viral Load

Hi 00! Thank you for reading. Some providers keep up-to-date with new findings but some struggle to do that with limited time. Bringing a completed test might help as well any other information you think is relevant. I would recommend asking the evaluator to send you any questionnaires or other forms in advance so that you have more time to think about your responses. Wish you best of luck with your evaluation! Take care!

In one of Breaking Bad episodes, Walter White visits Jesse Pinkman to drop off his cash share. During this visit, Walter recalls their starting days of cooking meth in an old, barely-functioning RV, which nearly landed them in trouble several times. Jesse had a “whole system” of what to do in emergencies, like praying that the old, junk-of-hunk wouldn’t “crap out” on him at a red light. Jesse wonders why they didn’t just buy a new RV even though they had made enough money by that time. Walter explains this away with one word, “Inertia.”

In physics, inertia is described…
